Meet Alex!

Alex is a young man who loves sports, video games, and helping others. He says his favorite video games to play are Mario Kart, Mario Party, or anything involving Star Wars.

Alex is an avid Detroit sports fan. Alex plays multiple sports with the Michigan Special Olympics and when he’s not competing, he is often found watching and talking about sports.

“I’ve been playing softball, basketball, poly hockey, bowling, and track & field with the Michigan Special Olympics for four years,” Alex said. “I like competing and winning medals.”

Donna, Alex’s mom, said that her son has joined a wonderful team of athletes who are older than him but have taken him under their wing. 

“He loves being part of a team,” Donna said. “His teammates watch out for him, and he’s been able to connect with people through shared interest.”

Before the Michigan Special Olympics, Alex was involved in Easterseals MORC Miracle League adaptive programs for nearly a dozen years. 

“We started with baseball when Alex was young,” Donna said. “It was a wonderful find because it gave him a safe place to be himself, learn new skills without judgement, and lots of support. It helped him establish his love of sports. After we discovered his love for sports, we dove into other programs they were offering like bowling, the football clinic, and dance.”

Easterseals MORC’s Miracle League began over 20 years ago, becoming Michigan’s first adaptive baseball field, in the heart of Southfield. Since then, the league has grown significantly, adding a new field in Orion Township in 2019 and now managing the Miracle League of Greater Flint field in Mundy Township. 

The program has expanded beyond baseball, now offering bowling, hockey, and skating skills, adaptive fitness, fun social events, and family gatherings, with even more activities on the way. 

Alex’s parents mentioned how rewarding it was to see their son enjoying the adaptive programs and engaging with his peers. 

“Easterseals MORC’s adaptive programs gave Alex a chance to explore what he likes and be physical in a safe environment free from judgement,” Donna 

 said. “They’re constantly looking for new opportunities for our kids to explore.”

Recently, Alex became an Easterseals MORC ambassador, hoping to inspire others by sharing his story. An ambassador is an individual who shares their story with various stakeholders and helps increase awareness of services and programs offered. 

"I love being an ambassador,” Alex said. “I really like sharing my story, talking about how Easterseals MORC helps people, and helping them raise money to help more people.” 

Alex’s sense of humor and passion to help others radiates in every interaction he has with people, whether he’s meeting someone for the first time or seeing someone again.
