Resources for Potential Pause in SNAP Benefits

Due to the ongoing federal government shutdown, the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) has received notice that there will not be funds available to pay food assistance (SNAP) benefits beginning November 1.
We know that many individuals we serve rely on these benefits and there is anxiety around the impact the funding pause will have on the families we support. We wanted to provide you with some resources to help you during this time.

While it is possible that an agreement could be reached to reopen the government this week, the uncertainty of a resolution and short time frame make it very likely that there will be a temporary funding pause in SNAP benefits.

We know that many individuals rely on these benefits and there is anxiety around the impact the funding pause will have on the community. We wanted to provide you with some resources to help you during this time.

For SNAP Recipients:  Ask them to contact their local MDHHS office or visit MI Bridges for updates.  Regular updates on SNAP funding are being provided at the top of the MI Bridges website.

Food Bank Council of Michigan: Find nearby food banks and learn about other hunger relief efforts.

Food Finder:  Food banks and other food resources searchable by zip code.

FindHelp.org:  Free or reduced cost resources such as food, health care, financial assistance and more searchable by zip code.

In response to the pause in benefits, Oakland Provider Alliance members and their supporting agencies are organizing an ongoing food drive. If you are interested in donating nonperishable food and personal care items, a list of needed items and drop-off locations can be found here.
