What is Sensory Integration?
Sensory Integration (SI) is our brain's ability to take in, organize, and interpret information using all of our senses. This process involves our senses of taste, smell, touch, sight and hearing, in addition to our sense of movement, body position, and force of gravity. When the brain is not able to accurately interpret incoming sensory information, problems may result in poor learning, delayed motor skills, and difficult or disruptive behaviors.
Who provides services?
Occupational therapists trained in sensory integration dysfunction and therapeutic strategies guides children through individual treatment programs.
Who Needs Sensory Integration?
- Overly sensitive or under reactive to touch, movement, sights or sounds
- Easily distracted
- Social and/or emotional problems
- Activity level that is unusually high or low
- Physical clumsiness or apparent carelessness
- Delays in speech, language, motor skills or academic achievement
- Impulsive behavior, lacking self-control
- Poor self-concept
