In Jenn’s home, everyday moments have become something worth celebrating.
A trip to the corner store for a soda. A load of laundry. A lesson in cutting potatoes for mashed potatoes. Even a shared moment of eye contact between mother and son.
For Jenn and her family, those are not small things. They are milestones.
There was a time when moments like these felt far away. For years, Jenn was fighting for understanding. She lived it. She knew it. But others struggled to understand. Her son, Jonathon, needed support that truly understood him.
Jenn noticed early that Jonathon was experiencing the world differently. Unfortunately, she encountered systems focused on managing behaviors rather than understanding the whole person. She sat through appointments, school meetings, evaluations, and difficult conversations, all while carrying this one desire, “I wanted Jonathon to thrive, to find his own superpowers,” she said.
That kind of fight changes a family.
Jonathon’s daily struggles became the family’s daily struggles. The stress of trying to find the right care, the right diagnosis, and the right path forward took a toll on everyone in the home. Jenn was doing everything she could to hold things together, but the family was exhausted. They were surviving, not thriving.
Then, in early 2020, they found Easterseals MORC.
Their first intake appointment happened just one week before the world shut down because of COVID-19. Even as services moved online, something important happened: for the first time in a long time, Jenn felt heard.
Through virtual visits, therapy, case management, and a team that took the time to see Jonathon as a whole person, Easterseals MORC helped the family move toward long-awaited answers. Staff members listened closely, worked together, and helped Jonathon receive the care he needed.
After 16 years of uncertainty, Jonathon was formally diagnosed as being on the autism spectrum.
A Path Forward
For Jenn, that moment was overwhelming in the best possible way. It was not about putting a label on her son. It was about finally having language, understanding, and a path forward.
After years of being told, in one way or another, to wait or to settle, Jenn finally had what she had been asking for all along: someone willing to see Jonathon for who he truly was.
And once that happened, the family began to change.
The progress did not always arrive in big, dramatic moments. It came step by step.
Jonathon began making eye contact more easily. He started growing more comfortable in social settings. Tasks that once felt impossible became achievable. He began building skills, routines, and confidence. He started imagining a future with more independence, even talking about living on his own someday.
For other families, those moments might seem ordinary. For Jenn, they are everything.
Finding His Super Power
And as Jonathon has grown, so has his ability to show the people around him exactly who he is.
His superpower, Jenn says, is compassion.
“If he sees somebody struggling or if they need help, he immediately wants to help,” she said.
That compassion has been there for years. Jenn remembers how attentive Jonathon was when she came home from major surgery. He wanted to bring her water, adjust her pillows, help her get comfortable, and make sure she had what she needed.
Today, that same caring spirit shows up in how he checks on neighbors, offers help without being asked, and notices when someone else is having a hard day.
In a world that can feel rushed and disconnected, Jonathon leads with kindness.
That is his Ability.
But one of the most powerful parts of Jenn’s story is that Easterseals MORC’s impact did not stop with Jonathon.
As she watched her son begin to make progress, Jenn realized she needed support too. After years of carrying trauma, stress, and the emotional weight of caring for her family, she made the decision to seek healing, receiving the same support she had provided Jonathon all those years.
That choice became another turning point.
Over the past five years, Jenn has done worked hard to process the years of struggle. And the ripple effects have reached beyond her. Her husband has also confronted the emotional toll of this journey, including having unexpected emergency open-heart surgery last summer.
What began as a quest to find support for their child became a pathway to something larger: healing for an entire family.
“I kind of have Easterseals MORC to thank for putting my family back together,” Jenn said.
That line captures what makes this story so powerful.
Easterseals MORC did help Jonathon. They helped him get the understanding, support, and services he needed to grow in confidence and independence. But they also helped Jenn feel less alone. They helped create space for her own healing. They supported a family that had spent years in crisis and helped them begin moving, together, in a new direction.
For Jenn, that impact lives not only in services, but in relationships. It lives in the staff members who made her family feel seen. It lives in the care, consistency, and compassion that reminded her they were more than a case file. They were a family worth fighting for.
Because of funding for services like Easterseals MORC, Jonathon is building the skills and confidence to live more independently. Because of funding for services like Easterseals MORC, Jenn found support for her own mental health journey. Because of funding for services like Easterseals MORC, one family found more than help for a diagnosis — they found a way back to one another.
Jenn is still telling this story for the same reason she started fighting in the first place: so another family might feel less alone, and have the opportunity to heal.
